The Fascinating World of Dennis Hopper on Satellite TV

Even fans of the great actor Dennis Hopper are unaware just how far back his career in Hollywood stretches.  If you happen upon a classic James Dean film like Rebel Without a Cause, look closely and you’ll see a very young Hopper bouncing around several different scenes.  He hadn’t quite established his famous dark persona yet, but there has always been something unique about this actor.  Over fifty years later, there is little he hasn’t done.  From countercultural hero (Easy Rider) to shady leading man (Blue Velvet) to director (Colors), Hopper has been a force in American cinema.  Check out these five fascinating films of his on satellite TV.

1. Apocalypse Now.  Some of the funniest moments of this classic Coppola war film belong to Hopper.  Playing a hippie journalist who is fascinated with the Kurtz legacy, Hopper does his best to disturb Martin Sheen before he attempts to carry out his assassination on Marlon Brando.  Few people could be as entertaining and interesting in this role as Hopper.  See this film in the new director’s cut in high definition on HBO.

2. Blue Velvet.  David Lynch’s masterpiece could never have packed the same punch if Hopper hadn’t done his best work here.  A depraved criminal with a boatload of issues, Hopper’s Frank is the darkest secret Kyle MacLachlan’s little Midwestern town has.  In between bizarre rendezvous with Isabella Rossellini and terrorizing MacLachlan, Hopper likes to kick back and hear his old friend sing “In Dreams” by Roy Orbison.  Don’t miss this classic film on the Independent Film Channel on satellite TV.

3. True Romance.  Another film in which he appears briefly but remains unforgettable, Hopper’s turn in True Romance culminates in the showdown with Christopher Walken.  Will Hopper give up his son’s whereabouts to this Sicilian thug?  Such a prospect is unlikely, but Hopper goes a few steps further before he meets his fate.  Watch two of the finest actors of a generation trade barbs in this Tarantino-penned film, a favorite on IFC.

4. Speed.  If you think Hopper plays a great villain, you’re not alone.  He turns up his bad-guy persona to 11 in this film, as the sadistic perpetrator of the plot to explode a L.A. city bus.  Pushing Keanu Reeves buttons and threatening the lives of countless innocent souls, Hopper lets it all hang out with a fury he hadn’t shown since Blue Velvet.  Still one of the most exciting action films on satellite TV, check this out commercial-free on HBO and Showtime.

5. The American Friend.  Sporting a cowboy hat and nothing but trouble on his plate, Hopper does excellent work portraying Highsmith’s Ripley character in this Wim Wenders film from the late 1970s.  While quite different from any of the other Ripley films you will see, this adaptation brings an art-house darkness to the fore which suits its subject well.  Check out The American Friend on Turner Classic Movies in HD.

The King and I (1956 Film Soundtrack)

The King and I (1956 Film Soundtrack)

$5.87

Compared with the Broadway cast recording, the 1956 soundtrack to the film version of The King and I wins hands down. Yul Brynner is the king (literally and figuratively) in both formats (how could anyone else own such a role?), but the movie’s score has better sonics, Brynner’s voice is stronger, and the tunes are more memorable (thanks to Alfred Newman’s conducting and Ken Darby’s scoring) than …
